Humber Bridge Board Overturns 'Zero' Error Fines
24 Jul
Summary
- Motorist fined for registration error: Os instead of zeroes.
- Humber Bridge Board quashed fines after appeal, citing mistake.
- Board advises drivers to check registration accuracy at purchase.

The Humber Bridge Board has been advised to withdraw fines issued to a motorist whose vehicle registration contained zeroes but was incorrectly recorded as letters. The driver, Tony Hughes, received two fines totaling £54 for crossing the bridge on June 22, after his registration details mistakenly included 'Os' instead of zeroes.
The RAC has called for a review of the bridge operator's processes to prevent similar incidents. The board subsequently cancelled the fines upon appeal, acknowledging the input error as an 'honest mistake'.
Mr. Hughes stated he consistently uses phonetic spellings and says 'zero' to prevent such confusion. The bridge board confirmed that administrative fees are waived in cases of honest mistakes and will continue this practice. They recommended drivers confirm their registration numbers are entered accurately when purchasing crossings.
