A Hull army veteran, Martin Chadburn, 53, has died after suffering fatal head injuries during a night out in Queen Victoria Square. Following a trial at Hull Crown Court, Lukasz Matusiak, 27, Britney Naylor, 20, and Shaytoyia Farrow, 21, were found guilty of manslaughter. Two other defendants were acquitted of the charge.
The incident occurred in the early hours of April 19th. Chadburn, an employee of the Hull 4 Heroes charity, was taken to hospital but succumbed to a fatal brain bleed two days later. The court heard the violence involved several blows to the head and stamping, escalating from an altercation sparked by racist remarks directed at the defendants.
During the trial, defense counsels argued that their clients acted in self-defense or to protect others, with some intervening due to witnessing what they believed was an attack on young women. Matusiak admitted to the punch that caused Chadburn to fall but denied intent to cause serious harm. Britney Naylor claimed Chadburn assaulted her, while Farrow admitted to kicking him while he was on the floor, stating it was an emotional reaction to seeing Britney being hurt.
Sentencing for the three convicted individuals has been adjourned to November 27th, pending pre-sentence reports. Judge John Thackray KC directed the jury to consider only the manslaughter charge for two other defendants, stating he was not satisfied there was proof of intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
