Summary
- Pinhole cameras discovered in a gym changing room.
- Privacy watchdog launches investigation into the gym chain.
- New security measures implemented after the incident.
Hong Kong's privacy watchdog has initiated an investigation into the commercial gym chain 24/7 Fitness. This action follows the discovery of pinhole cameras hidden in the ceiling of a changing room at one of its Sha Tin branches last month.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) is now examining the company's security protocols. The probe aims to ensure the adequate protection of member data privacy and to assess the sufficiency of measures in place to prevent similar occurrences.
A 34-year-old man was arrested and charged with voyeurism in connection with the incident. 24/7 Fitness has stated it has suspended the suspect's membership and is cooperating with the police investigation.
In response to the discovery, 24/7 Fitness has implemented new procedures and increased inspections for hidden cameras across all its more than 160 branches throughout Hong Kong. The company assured members that steps have been taken to ensure facilities like showers and restrooms can be used safely.
