21 Sep
Summary
- Graveyard at historic Thundridge Old Church was vandalized on August 16.
- Suspects with metal detectors were seen in the graveyard area.
- Campaigners are raising funds to improve security and repair damage.
Campaigners fighting to protect the Grade II listed 15th Century tower of Thundridge Old Church are reinforcing security after recent vandalism. On August 16, holes were dug in the graveyard of St. Mary and All Saints near Ware. Police released CCTV footage showing men with suspected metal detectors in the area.
Dave Blowers, chair of the Thundridge Old Church Action Group (TOCAG), expressed concern, stating that vandalism impedes their efforts. The group is actively fundraising for enhanced security and necessary repairs. The site, a scheduled monument, legally prohibits ground disturbance and metal detecting.
Last year, the church received over £70,000 for tower restoration. TOCAG seeks to manage the site, highlighting its 1,000-year history, including notable figures like abolitionist Reverend William Hughes. The group envisions revitalizing the historic location as a community hub.
