Model Mariah Idrissi, who gained recognition as the first woman to wear a hijab in an H&M commercial, is now lending her voice to a new campaign against anti-Muslim hate. Growing up in a multicultural London, Idrissi initially experienced little prejudice but found it more prevalent in her professional life, often feeling isolated at events where she was the only one in a hijab.
To address these issues, a powerful short film has been released to promote the launch of a new national helpline. This initiative by Muslim Women's Network UK, a Birmingham-based organization, encourages Muslim women to report all forms of anti-Muslim hate crime, from minor comments to more significant incidents.
The film depicts a scenario where Idrissi is told to "go home" and "take that thing off" from a passing car, a common experience for many. A version of herself then encourages her to use the new helpline, emphasizing that such incidents, regardless of their perceived minor nature, should not be ignored.
The campaign, commissioned by the Media Trust, also aims to reassure victims that they are not imagining these experiences and that support is available. Idrissi hopes the film will prompt offenders to consider the impact of their words and encourage broader community awareness and support for combating Islamophobia in the UK.
