A father's swift actions heroically ended a tragic shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday. Kaylub Giamanco, a carpenter and father of two students, confronted and fatally shot the 16-year-old gunman after hearing gunshots and seeing him enter the school.
The attack tragically claimed the lives of three children, aged 5, 8, and 11, along with a teacher and the perpetrator. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher sustained critical injuries and were hospitalized.
The teen gunman used a shotgun, believed to have been purchased by his mother, to force his way into the school by firing at locked doors. Authorities received multiple 911 calls reporting the active shooter situation around 1 p.m.
Community members, including Oregon Governor Tina Kotek and Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler, gathered for a vigil to mourn the loss. Governor Kotek praised Giamanco's bravery in intervening to prevent further casualties. The school district superintendent expressed profound grief and emphasized support for students and staff.
