A peaceful snorkel tour off the coast of Hawaii was shattered when a tourist allegedly attacked the boat captain. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at Honokōhau Harbor in Kailua-Kona.
Avery Nissen, 21, from Overland Park, Kansas, is accused of stabbing the 62-year-old captain, Stanley Lurbiecki, with a filet knife. Lurbiecki sustained several stab wounds to his head, hands, and abdomen. He was transported to a local hospital and is reportedly in stable condition.
Other passengers onboard the catamaran, operated by Hawaii Nautical, acted quickly to restrain Nissen after the alleged assault began. Police responded to the scene and arrested Nissen.
Nissen has been charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. His bail was set at $1.57 million, and he is expected in court soon. The motive behind the alleged attack is currently unknown.
