Harry & Meghan Hail Social Media Trial 'Reckoning'
26 Mar
Summary
- Jury found Meta and YouTube liable for platform's mental health impact.
- Plaintiff awarded $3 million compensatory and $6 million punitive damages.
- Harry and Meghan called the verdict a 'reckoning' for Big Tech.

A Los Angeles jury has found Meta and Google-owned YouTube liable in a significant social media addiction case, a verdict hailed as a "reckoning" by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, through their foundation Archewell Philanthropies, issued a statement supporting the ruling, which found the platforms responsible for a plaintiff's mental health struggles.
The 20-year-old plaintiff alleged that Instagram and YouTube, as minors, caused her mental health issues, including depressive episodes and suicidal thoughts. The jury ordered Meta and YouTube to pay $3 million in compensatory damages and $6 million in punitive damages. This case was the first of over 1,600 consolidated lawsuits.
Prince Harry and Meghan also referenced a separate $375 million verdict against Meta in New Mexico for child safety issues. They stated that the verdicts send a powerful message to Big Tech, confirming that harm stems from product design intended to exploit users, not protect them. Harry had previously met with grieving families affected by social media-related deaths, emphasizing the need for truth, justice, and accountability.
Meta is reportedly evaluating its legal options and stated they "respectfully disagree with the verdict," arguing that teen mental health is complex and not solely linked to one app. Google asserted that YouTube is a responsibly built streaming platform, not a social media service.
