Essex Police are making a direct appeal to an anonymous letter writer who may possess vital information about the tragic 2012 arson attack that killed a mother and her five children in Harlow. Dr. Sabah Usmani and her five young children died in the fire at their Barn Mead home on October 15, 2012, while the father, Dr. Abdul Shakoor, was the sole survivor. The author of a handwritten letter, received by police last July, is believed to be reticent but unable to live with the knowledge of the events.
Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe stated that the letter contained details the investigation team was eager to pursue and is appealing for the writer to come forward with confidence, assuring them fair treatment. The investigation, named Operation Shakespeare, has been ongoing for almost 14 years, with considerable resources dedicated to solving the case, including taking hundreds of witness statements and examining numerous exhibits. Despite several arrests, no charges have been filed.
The anonymous letter was reportedly sent shortly after the release of a BBC podcast that revisited the case, exploring lingering questions about the fire. The podcast also highlighted potential issues with early forensic work, including evidence being inadvertently destroyed. Police remain committed to finding answers for Dr. Shakoor and urge anyone in the Harlow community with information, however small, to contact them.
