Gurgaon Cops Crack Down: FIRs for Drunk Drivers
8 Mar
Summary
- Gurgaon police now file FIRs for drunk driving, adding criminal charges.
- A recent case involved a driver with alcohol levels nearly seven times the limit.
- Last year, 26,122 challans for drunken driving were issued in the city.

Effective last month, Gurgaon police are now registering First Information Reports (FIRs) against motorists apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol. This significantly increases the consequences for offenders, adding criminal cases to existing penalties like challans, license suspension, and vehicle impoundment.
The enhanced enforcement targets repeat offenders and aims to curb road accidents. In a recent case, a 49-year-old man was caught driving with an alcohol level nearly seven times the permissible limit of 30 mg per 100 ml of blood. The incident led to charges under sections of the BNS and the Motor Vehicles Act, with his vehicle seized.
This stricter approach follows a substantial number of challans issued previously, with 26,122 recorded for drunken driving in the city last year alone. The police department, under the direction of Police Commissioner Vikas Arora, is conducting regular checking drives across Gurgaon. This initiative mirrors recent actions taken against wrong-side driving, where FIRs are also being filed more consistently.
