21 Feb
Summary
- 949 commuters fined for lane rule violations this month.
- Rs 8 lakh imposed in fines during a 19-day special drive.
- Campaign aims to organize traffic and enhance road safety.

In a focused 19-day campaign concluding on February 19, Gurgaon police issued fines to 949 commuters for violating lane rules. This enforcement drive resulted in Rs 8 lakh being collected from offenders. Police teams were stationed on key city stretches to ensure drivers adhered to designated lanes. Wrong-lane driving and sudden lane changes were identified as primary contributors to road accidents, endangering motorists and pedestrians alike.
Officers emphasized compliance with lane markings, noting that the leftmost lane is designated for heavy vehicles, the middle for light vehicles, and the right for overtaking. The campaign's objective was to promote more organized and smoother traffic movement while enhancing overall road safety. In January alone, 3,555 violators were challaned for lane-change infractions, following 75,280 such violations recorded last year.
Penalties for lane-change violations start at Rs 500 for the first offense, escalating to Rs 1,500 for subsequent offenses. Beyond strict enforcement, the department also conducted awareness programs for various driver groups, including truck unions and bus drivers, to sensitize them to traffic rules. Similar enforcement drives are planned to continue, ensuring better compliance and safer roads in Gurgaon.
