In a tragic turn of events, a 27-year-old Canadian mother named Vanessa Collias has confessed to killing her two young sons, Yiannis (5) and Dimitri (4), just a week after the death of her 72-year-old husband, Costa Collias.
Costa Collias passed away on December 1, 2023, from an aggressive form of leukemia and sepsis. Vanessa, who had been her husband's primary caregiver, said she was exhausted and broke down under the strain. On December 10, 2023, police found the two boys dead in their Ontario apartment, with funeral clothes laid out nearby. Vanessa later revealed that she had suffocated them while singing the lullaby "You Are My Sunshine."
After killing her sons, Vanessa attempted to take her own life by jumping off her balcony. She survived the attempt but is now a paraplegic. In an emotional court appearance, Vanessa expressed her deep regret, saying, "A part of me will always question why I never said I need help. I stand before you, still that broken person who needs help putting herself back together."
The Crown of Canada initially charged Vanessa with first-degree murder, but the charges were later reduced to second-degree murder after a psychiatrist found she was suffering from a mental health episode at the time of the killings. Vanessa was sentenced to life in prison for the tragic deaths of her two beloved sons.
