Swiss Star Xhaka Investigated Over Fake Covid Pass

Swiss prosecutors are investigating football star Granit Xhaka for allegedly obtaining a forged Covid-19 vaccination certificate in 2022. The certificate was reportedly acquired when it was required for certain international travel from Switzerland. Xhaka, who was playing for Arsenal at the time, admitted on social media that he had a mistrust of vaccines and was influenced by worries, leading him to mistakenly acquire a certificate instead of seeking proper clarification.

The midfielder has taken responsibility for his actions and pledged full cooperation with authorities. While Switzerland never had a general legal mandate for certificates, they were necessary for various activities and travel until spring 2022. After this period, certificates continued to be issued primarily for international travel requirements.

Following his public statement, Xhaka has withdrawn from the Swiss national team camp for their upcoming Nations League fixtures. This decision was made jointly by the player and management, and his future with the team will be discussed after the international break. Xhaka captained Switzerland at the World Cup earlier this year.
