A 20-year-old woman, Amelia Vanderhorst, was convicted of a graffiti charge in Mount Gambier Magistrates Court on Tuesday for attaching googly eyes to a sculpture. She was ordered to pay A$2,000 as compensation and complete 60 hours of community service. Her lawyer stated she was under the influence of MDMA and alcohol at the time of the offense last September.
The sculpture, unveiled last July and nicknamed the Blue Blob, cost A$136,000. It depicts a mythical megafauna inspired by an ancient marsupial ant-eater. Local Mayor Lynette Martin condemned the act as willful damage, noting that the googly eyes could not be removed without harming the artwork.
