12 Oct
Summary
- Crime branch investigates wider involvement in Porvorim shootout.
- Nine arrests made, motive still under investigation.
- Suspects used stolen vehicles and avoided electronic traces.

The crime branch of the Goa police is actively investigating the August 28 Porvorim shootout, focusing on the potential involvement of individuals beyond the primary suspect, Gopal Naik. Naik was apprehended last week and is undergoing interrogation to uncover the motive behind the incident.
Authorities have arrested nine people in connection with the shooting but have yet to determine a clear motive. Crime branch Superintendent Rahul Gupta stated that investigators are examining whether Naik was instructed to carry out the attack. The group reportedly utilized both a two-wheeler and a four-wheeler to execute the shootout.
CCTV footage revealed that the suspects conducted surveillance for approximately four days prior to the incident, with a four-wheeler frequently observed circling the Porvorim hotel. Police have since seized the vehicles used in the attack. A senior crime branch officer indicated that the assailants likely employed stolen vehicles with falsified number plates to evade law enforcement.
The suspects are believed to have abandoned the two-wheeler at the scene and fled in the four-wheeler. To conceal their identities, they reportedly stayed at the railway station instead of a hotel and refrained from using mobile phones. The shooting targeted Shrinivas Nayak, director of the Majestic Pride Group, which operates casinos in Goa. Nayak escaped unharmed after three shots were fired.
