Global Waste Crime Ring Busted: 330 Arrested!
12 Mar
Summary
- Over 330 individuals apprehended in 70 countries.
- Authorities seized over 127,000 tons of illicit waste.
- Criminals profited at least 31 million euros from waste trafficking.

An international operation has resulted in the arrest of over 330 individuals across 70 countries, targeting sophisticated organised crime networks engaged in illicit waste trafficking. Europol announced the crackdown, which focused on the illegal export of waste within Europe and to continents including Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Authorities confiscated substantial amounts of hazardous materials, including 127,149 metric tons of waste, 602 tons of polluting agents, 75 tons of plant protection chemicals, and 2.3 tons of mercury. The financial impact is also significant, with nearly 10 million euros in cash and bank accounts seized, and estimated illicit profits reaching at least 31 million euros.
This global problem operates through parallel criminal circuits, exploiting waste management systems. Criminals are adept at document forgery and fraud to transport hazardous materials, creating serious environmental damage and posing risks to public health. Last year, Spanish police dismantled a gang suspected of smuggling over 40,000 tons of untreated urban waste annually from Italy to Spain, underscoring the persistent nature of this crime.
