An extensive global anti-scam initiative, a collaboration between Meta, the FBI, the Department of Justice, and international law enforcement, has resulted in the arrest of 63 individuals and the seizure of over $3 million in cryptocurrency. This operation, which concluded recently, also saw the removal of approximately 1.4 million scam-related accounts from Meta's platforms, Facebook and Instagram. The initiative focused on dismantling sophisticated scam networks accused of stealing billions annually from unsuspecting individuals through romance scams and cryptocurrency fraud.
Authorities revealed that many of these criminal organizations were based in Southeast Asia, operating from forced-labor compounds linked to transnational organized crime. Law enforcement efforts specifically targeted alleged organizers and money launderers. As part of this crackdown, Coinbase froze more than $3 million in cryptocurrency assets tied to these illicit networks. Microsoft also played a role by disabling around 20,000 accounts associated with scam operations, while Starlink disrupted thousands of internet terminals used by these groups.
