Summary
- Accused killer Rex Heuermann expected to plead guilty to seven murders.
- Investigation spanned over three decades, frustrating victims' families.
- Task force used DNA, hairs, and cell phone records to build case.

Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old architect, is anticipated to plead guilty on Wednesday to the murders of seven women. He has been in custody since July 2023, facing charges for killings that span over three decades. The investigation, which began in earnest with the 2010 disappearance of Shannan Gilbert, led to the discovery of at least 10 sets of human remains. Frustration mounted for victims' families due to the investigation's slow pace over more than a decade.
A multi-agency task force, formed in February 2022, reexamined the Gilgo Beach killings. Utilizing DNA evidence from a pizza crust matching hairs found on victims, along with cell phone records and witness accounts, investigators built a case against Heuermann. He was initially arrested in July 2023 and subsequently charged with four additional murders, with the earliest incident dating back to 1993.
The seven victims are identified as Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, and Sandra Costilla. A guilty plea would bring relief to their families after years of seeking justice. The case has also garnered attention through books and documentaries, highlighting the long wait for accountability.
