Christmas cheer in Spaldwick, Cambridgeshire, was diminished when thieves stole a towering three-meter-high nutcracker model from a resident's home on Wednesday evening. Security cameras recorded the incident, showing two people loading the large decoration onto a vehicle. The homeowners, known for their elaborate Christmas displays that raise funds for Woodgreen Pets Charity, reported the theft to the police, highlighting the sentimental and charitable value of the stolen item.
The theft occurred around 8 PM GMT, with footage later showing unsuccessful attempts to remove a second, similar nutcracker. The owners described the nutcracker as being "very heavy" and difficult to untether, expressing disbelief at how it was removed and transported. The incident has deeply affected the community, which typically enjoys the festive decorations, with one of the owners stating it "stripped away some of the joy" of Christmas.
In a heartwarming display of community spirit following the theft, children left miniature nutcracker guards on the homeowners' doorstep with a card. Despite this gesture, the couple hopes for the safe return of their full-size nutcracker, describing it as having a "lonely nutcracker - he wants his mate back." Cambridgeshire Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident.
