In Surat, India, a robbery gang has been apprehended by police for luring men through a gay dating app. The accused operated under the guise of a fake profile named 'Raj' on the 'POLO Gay Dating & Chat' app, befriending users and inviting them to isolated spots. There, victims were assaulted and robbed of their belongings and cash, with one victim forced to make a Rs 1,000 digital transfer.
The gang is believed to have targeted at least three men within a 15-day span. Investigators utilized mobile phone location data, CCTV footage, and human intelligence to track down and arrest two individuals, Sushant and Somraj Gameti, and detain a juvenile. Stolen items, including a mobile phone and cash, were recovered.
This incident follows a similar case last month in Gujarat's Surendranagar district, where another man was lured via the same app, assaulted, and extorted of Rs 31,000 by a seven-member group threatening to release personal media online. Police are actively investigating if more victims were targeted by the Surat-based ring.
