- His bride, Tina, died mysteriously while scuba diving in 2003.
- Watson's past is largely unknown to locals in his current city.

Gabe Watson, known as the 'honeymoon killer,' is now living a secluded family life in Birmingham, Alabama. This comes more than 20 years after his bride, Tina, died under mysterious circumstances while scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef in October 2003. Watson, who was an experienced rescue diver while Tina was a novice, was later convicted of manslaughter.
The Queensland coroner's investigation into Tina's death in 2008 suggested motive for murder, citing claims that Watson had asked his bride to increase her life insurance. Watson eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter, based on criminal negligence as Tina's dive buddy, not intentional harm.
After serving 18 months in prison in Queensland, Watson was extradited to the United States. In Alabama, prosecutors alleged he deliberately turned off his wife's air supply. However, he was acquitted of murder charges in 2012 due to insufficient evidence. Despite the notoriety, Watson's past is virtually unknown in his current city of Birmingham.
