Funeral Home Horror: Bodies Rotting for Weeks
12 Dec
Summary
- 46 bodies were kept unrefrigerated for over a month in a mortuary room.
- Funeral directors found guilty of preventing lawful burial, fraud, and public nuisance.
- Water damage and lack of refrigeration contributed to the bodies' decay.

Two funeral directors, Richard Elkin and Hayley Bell, have been found guilty of serious offenses including preventing lawful burial, intentionally causing a public nuisance, and fraud. In 2022 and 2023, the pair stored 46 bodies in an unrefrigerated room at their funeral home in Gosport, Hampshire, for extended periods, some exceeding a month.
The dire conditions within the mortuary were revealed when court agents repossessed the premises due to unpaid debts. Prosecutors detailed how water damage from a leaking roof had affected the room, and the internal temperature was no different from the rest of the building. This lack of refrigeration led to the decomposition of bodies, with one man's remains showing obvious signs of decay after 36 days.
Families were left in shock upon discovering the state of their loved ones' remains. Elkin, aged 49, and Bell, aged 42, are scheduled to be sentenced on February 19th for their roles in this disturbing case of neglect and misconduct.
