Fugitive Irish Woman Convicted of 2014 Double Murder After 8-Year Manhunt

The long and winding saga of a double murder case in Ireland has finally reached its conclusion, with the conviction of fugitive Ruth Lawrence for the 2014 killings of Eoin O'Connor and Anthony Keegan.

Lawrence, an Irish woman originally from Dublin, had fled the country shortly after the murders, making her way to South Africa with her boyfriend Neville van der Westhuizen. For nearly 8 years, she managed to evade authorities, living under an assumed name and working as a tattoo artist while also volunteering at a charity that assisted human trafficking victims.

However, Lawrence's luck ran out in October 2022 when a specialized police unit in South Africa, known as The Hawks, tracked her down to a small bungalow in the city of Bloemfontein. She was arrested and, after a lengthy extradition process, returned to Ireland to stand trial for the murders.

This week, the 45-year-old was found guilty of the killings, which prosecutors say were carried out in a brutal fashion, with both O'Connor and Keegan shot execution-style. The court heard testimony from two witnesses who claimed Lawrence and her boyfriend were responsible for the murders, which stemmed from a drug debt owed by van der Westhuizen.
