Edward Phillips-Smith, a 75-year-old former school chaplain, has been formally charged with historic child sex offenses. The charges stem from alleged incidents that occurred between 1978 and 1980 in Wolverhampton. West Midlands Police led the investigation that resulted in the charges.
Phillips-Smith, who was ordained as a priest in 1974, previously served as a chaplain at St Peter's Collegiate Academy in Wolverhampton. The alleged offenses include indecent assault and gross indecency with a boy under the age of 14. He has not yet entered a plea.
The case has proceeded through court hearings, with mention hearings held at Wolverhampton Crown Court and Dudley Magistrates' Court. Following his tenure at St Peter's, Phillips-Smith also worked at Edgarley Hall in Somerset and Papplewick Prep School in Berkshire. A further hearing is scheduled for February 5, 2026.
