Former carer jailed for targeting vulnerable victims

A man who previously worked as a care provider has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment for a string of offenses including robbery and burglary. The individual, identified as Essien, targeted vulnerable people, including a cerebral palsy sufferer confined to a wheelchair, who he had previously been employed to assist.

Essien exploited his knowledge of these individuals to gain entry into their homes, using a key from a coded safe to access one victim's residence while he slept. He later forced his way into the home of an elderly couple, stealing from them. His criminal activities concluded with him forcibly taking a handbag from a woman using a walking stick.

The court noted that an alcohol problem likely contributed to Essien's downfall. He admitted to multiple charges, including two counts of robbery, four of burglary, and fraud. The judge emphasized the betrayal of trust and the significant distress caused to the victims, many of whom were elderly and unwell.

Essien's employment with a company called Comfort Care ended with his suspension, and his subsequent criminal actions began the very next day. He was arrested on March 16th and conditionally bailed, but committed further offenses on May 15th before his final arrest on May 17th, leading to his remand in custody. His defense attorney indicated he would likely face deportation after serving a portion of his sentence.
