The Metropolitan Police's elite Flying Squad, known for tackling violent crime, is reportedly having its firearms confiscated as part of a new cost-saving initiative. This move has left detectives within the unit reportedly devastated, with past and present officers expressing concern over the implications for public safety.

Barry Phillips, a member of the Flying Squad Association, voiced strong opposition, suggesting that armed robbers will likely celebrate the decision. He argued that removing firearms reduces the unit, established in 1918, to a "run-of-the-mill" force, diminishing its historical impact, which notably included the apprehension of the Great Train robbers.

The Metropolitan Police faces a substantial £260 million funding gap, leading to drastic measures including the reduction of 1,700 officers and staff.
