Florida Woman Jailed for Microsoft Key Scheme
4 Mar
Summary
- A Florida woman received 22 months in prison for her actions.
- She resold unauthorized Microsoft product key codes.
- The scheme operated between 2018 and 2023.

Heidi Richards, a 52-year-old Florida resident, has been sentenced to 22 months in prison for her involvement in trafficking unauthorized Microsoft product key codes. Operating through her company, Trinity Software Distribution, Richards harvested key codes from genuine Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) labels, which she acquired at significantly reduced prices.
From 2018 to 2023, Richards paid millions of dollars for these COA labels, sourced both domestically and internationally. These labels, containing product keys for software like Windows and Office, were then sold to customers at prices below suggested retail. This practice violated laws prohibiting the sale of standalone COA labels.
Richards was arrested in January 2024 and subsequently found guilty by a jury. In addition to her prison sentence, she has been ordered to pay a $50,000 fine. The case highlights the illicit gray market for discounted software, where the authenticity and functionality of activation keys can be questionable.
