In Florida, Jermaine Lynn Long received a 45-year prison sentence for a vicious attack on a 13-year-old boy. The incident occurred on February 14, when Long approached the teen from behind near the Daytona Beach Boardwalk and inflicted a severe neck wound with a box cutter. Surveillance footage captured the assault, which left the young victim requiring 13 stitches.
Long pleaded no contest to aggravated battery and attempted second-degree murder on October 15. His sentence includes 30 years related to his status as a 'prison release offender.' The victim, Sullivan Clarke, now 14, bravely addressed the court, expressing that he almost died and now lives with a permanent neck scar.
Long offered an apology in court, stating he didn't know what he was doing at the time. However, the victim and his mother expressed a lack of forgiveness. The mother questioned whether authorities had adequately searched Long previously, recalling an alleged earlier incident where he used a sledgehammer. State Attorney R.J. Larizza stated that a dangerous individual has been removed from society for decades.
