Man Drives Backwards on Florida Highway
20 Mar
Summary
- Man drove his car backwards on a busy Florida highway.
- He claimed mechanical issues led him to drive towards AutoZone.
- This incident was his tenth driving conviction for license suspension.

In a highly unusual incident last week, 47-year-old William Murphy III of Palm Coast was apprehended by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office for driving his vehicle in reverse on State Road 100. Multiple concerned citizens reported the backwards driving, prompting deputies to locate Murphy. He was found at a Panda Express parking lot, having apparently switched back to driving forward before law enforcement arrived.
When questioned, Murphy stated that a mechanical problem with his car led him to believe driving backwards to AutoZone was the optimal solution. Ironically, deputies reported that the car's mechanical issues seemed to disappear once they began pursuing him. Murphy remained calm, telling a deputy he didn't think driving backwards was that bad.
Further investigation revealed that Murphy's driving record includes multiple prior offenses. He was arrested for habitual driving while license suspended or revoked, marking his tenth or more conviction for this offense. He was booked into the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and later released on a $1,000 bond.
