A 25-year-old man was arrested on September 3rd, nearly a month after a fatal hit-and-run crash involving an e-bike. Michael Steigerwald faces charges for failing to stop or remain at the scene of a crash that resulted in death. The incident occurred on August 9th when Steven Edward Poteat, 48, an e-bike rider, was struck by a pickup truck.
The crash happened just before 9 p.m. on Eighth Street as Poteat was traveling west. The pickup truck, driven by Steigerwald, swerved but ultimately collided with the e-bike. Poteat was thrown onto the roadway and later pronounced dead at a hospital. The truck fled the scene, leaving Poteat without aid.
Witnesses reported seeing a white pickup truck swerve before fleeing. Law enforcement identified the suspect vehicle as a white Ford F-150, missing its passenger sideview mirror. A tip led investigators to Steigerwald's truck, which was found on August 12th. Steigerwald was arrested at his residence and held on $500,000 bail, with his next court date scheduled for October 14th.
