A daycare worker in Panama City, Florida, has been arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse. The incident involved a 3-month-old infant who arrived at HCA Florida Gulf Coast Hospital with a fractured skull, leg, and ribs, as well as a brain bleed. Police investigations revealed that the infant allegedly sustained these severe injuries earlier that day while under the care of employee LaKayla E. Hamilton.
Initially, Hamilton denied knowledge of the injuries. However, she later confessed to police that she assaulted the infant due to personal issues and an aggravating text message. Hamilton admitted to repeatedly slamming the child into a crib and changing table, squeezing, shaking, and hitting the infant with toys in an effort to stop its crying. A second instance of abuse in the same manner was also reported.
Investigators stated that the infant might not have survived the "catastrophic injuries" without the quick intervention of the parents seeking immediate medical care. Hamilton was booked into the Bay County Jail on two counts of aggravated child abuse, with her bond set at $210,000. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
