Summary
- Filmmakers face a police case for allegedly defrauding Rs 1.5 crore.
- The dispute involves the sale of worldwide distribution and digital rights.
- Producers allegedly sold rights already assigned to another company.

A police case has been registered against filmmaker Indra Kumar and producer Ashok Thakeria in Mumbai, concerning allegations of defrauding a film distribution firm of Rs 1.5 crore. The Amboli Police filed the case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita after a complaint from Grand Master, a film distribution company.
The complaint details that Maruti International, owned by the accused, sold the permanent worldwide distribution and digital rights of the 2007 film 'Dhamaal' in October 2019. Grand Master claims they were assured no third-party rights existed for the film at that time.
However, the distributor discovered that the producers had previously sold the lifetime OTT and digital rights to Shemaroo Entertainment Limited back in 2015. This alleged dual sale has led to the cancellation of numerous digital distribution deals, causing substantial financial losses to Grand Master.
Following a legal notice sent in January 2023, the accused reportedly did not provide a satisfactory response, prompting the police to launch a formal investigation into the matter.
