Indian Families Face Crisis: Filicide-Suicides on the Rise?

Recent months have seen a disturbing string of filicide-suicide cases in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Haryana. These incidents, where parents kill their children before taking their own lives, often stem from severe marital disputes, financial stress, or suspected infidelity. For example, in January 2024, a Goa-based CEO allegedly smothered her son due to a divorce.

National data indicates family problems are the leading cause of suicide in India, accounting for over 34% of cases. While filicide-suicide isn't separately tracked, this statistic points to the prevalent domestic turmoil. Psychiatrists suggest distorted cognition due to severe depression or a parent's "extended self-perception" can lead to these extreme acts.

Motives often include "spousal revenge" or preventing custody battles, with parents sometimes framing the killings as saving children from hardship. However, experts like Maitrayee Sen emphasize parental psychopathology and untreated mental health disorders as key factors in many cases, though clear warning signs are difficult to ascertain.

The crisis is amplified by a significant gap in India's mental health system. Despite community training programs, a large percentage of individuals with mental health disorders do not receive treatment due to a shortage of professionals and inadequate budget allocation. This systemic failure prevents timely intervention, leaving vulnerable families at extreme risk.
