Police responded to a home on Bedlington Drive NW and found Lester Jones, 47, deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. His 16-year-old daughter was also found with serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
The preliminary investigation by the Concord Police Department indicates the suspect, 17-year-old Keshaun Degraffenreid, who was dating the 16-year-old victim, allegedly assaulted his girlfriend following an argument. When Mr. Jones intervened, the suspect reportedly fired multiple rounds, fatally wounding the father and severely injuring the daughter.
Degraffenreid was apprehended shortly after the incident following a brief foot chase. He has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, misdemeanor domestic violence, and resisting officers. Additional charges for marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession were also filed.
Neighbors have expressed grief and commended Jones for his bravery in protecting his child. Degraffenreid is currently held without bond at the Cabarrus County Jail, with his next court appearance scheduled for June 18.
