In Ohio, a father of three named Billy Grooms lost his life after courageously intervening in an assault. Grooms, 49, was at a Hillsboro gas station on Sunday, May 31, when he witnessed a woman being strangled. He attempted to stop the attacker, who then drove a truck over him.
Grooms sustained severe injuries, including multiple broken bones and a brain injury. He was taken off life support on Thursday, June 4. His wife noted his condition declined despite medical intervention.
The suspect, Javen Meadows, 22, has been charged with strangulation and assault related to the woman's attack. Court records indicate Meadows allegedly followed his ex-girlfriend to the gas station and assaulted her before running over Grooms. Meadows faces additional charges pending investigation by Hillsboro Police.
