A father on trial for the alleged shaking death of his infant son, Atticus, has presented his defense to the jury. The court heard that the evening of the incident was the first time since Atticus's birth that the couple had been out together. The father admitted to drinking up to nine pints of beer, though he stated alcohol does not affect his temper. While the baby's mother was upstairs, the father was feeding Atticus.
Prosecutors contend that the father violently shook Atticus, resulting in severe brain and spinal cord injuries, along with cracked ribs. Medical experts have indicated that the baby's injuries were consistent with significant trauma, such as a fall from height or a road traffic collision. Atticus was hospitalized but ultimately died from his injuries on 23 July 2022, never having breathed independently.
