A woman named Donna Brighton, from Leicester, was killed when she was thrown from a taxi during a collision on September 16, 2023. She was on her way home from celebrating her 60th birthday. The crash occurred in Glenfield Road at approximately 8:25 PM BST.
Thomas Goulty, the driver of a car, was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to causing Brighton's death and serious injuries to other passengers through careless driving. He had been driving at 64 mph in a 30 mph zone. The taxi driver, Sarwar Mohammad, received a six-month suspended sentence for his involvement.
Leicester Crown Court heard that the collision resulted from the combined actions of both drivers. Brighton was a passenger in Mohammad's taxi when it was struck by Goulty's vehicle. The family of Donna Brighton described her as a "force of nature" whose loss has created an "enormous void".
