Four-year-old Peter Maughan tragically died after being ejected from his family's truck during a high-speed pursuit on the A2 in Kent on June 1 last year. The crash occurred when Owen Maughan, the child's mother's cousin, deliberately rammed the vehicle carrying Peter and his parents. Owen and his father, Patrick, were subsequently found not guilty of murder.
Dashcam footage captured the dramatic chase, with Owen Maughan accused of using his truck as a weapon. Despite accepting responsibility for Peter's death and admitting to manslaughter, Owen denied intending serious harm. His father, Patrick, was convicted of Peter's manslaughter and inflicting grievous bodily harm on Peter's father, Lovell Mahon, who was left paralyzed by the collision.
The court heard that both defendants had been drinking heavily before the incident. They were found guilty of Peter's manslaughter and causing serious injury to Lovell Mahon, while being acquitted of murder and other charges. The pair fled the scene, attempting to conceal their involvement before their eventual arrest.
Owen Maughan, who was accused of ramming the vehicle in a state of fury, will be sentenced later, as will his father. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offenses and the need for background reports. The jury's verdicts followed a three-week trial on an emotionally charged case.
