- Legal drug use contributed to a fatal four-vehicle collision.

A man has received a sentence of over nine years for causing a fatal collision while driving a Jaguar. Adam Bates, aged 23, admitted to death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury to another individual, and driving without insurance. He stated he had taken a legal drug, previously having a history of benzodiazepine addiction.
The crash occurred on the A10 in Cambridgeshire and involved four vehicles. Bates's erratic driving, described as 'swerving all over the road,' led to a collision with a road sweeping lorry, which then spun into the victims' Mini Cooper. William Doherty, 53, tragically died, and his wife, Susan, sustained serious injuries, including a brain bleed.
During sentencing, the judge highlighted the profound impact of Bates's 'bad and selfish choices' on the Doherty family. Mrs. Doherty shared her grief, stating her children lost their father and she lost the love of her life. Bates received a nine-year and four-month sentence and a driving ban of over 12 years.
