In Puducherry, a 61-year-old farmer, R Sivapoosanam from Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district, has been sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment. The Chief Judicial Magistrate found him guilty of forging nativity, nationality, caste, and birth certificates for his son and daughter.
These forged documents were used in 2004 to seek admission to an MBBS program via the Centralised Admission Committee (Centac) under the Puducherry residents' quota. However, Centac officials detected the fraudulent certificates, leading to a police complaint and subsequent charges.
Sivapoosanam was convicted for cheating, forgery, and using forged documents, receiving concurrent sentences totaling five years and fines amounting to Rs 11,000. The court acquitted his son, daughter, and one friend due to insufficient proof, while three other co-accused died during the trial.
