Thomas Perez Jr. falsely confessed to murdering his father, Thomas Perez Sr., following a 17-hour police interrogation. The ordeal began when Perez Jr. reported his father missing in August 2018, after his father and their dog did not return from a walk. Police, suspecting foul play, subjected Perez Jr. to intense questioning.
During the interrogation, officers employed deceptive tactics, lying to Perez Jr. about his father's death and even threatening the well-being of his dog. After over 17 hours of sleep deprivation and psychological pressure, Perez Jr. expressed remorse, which police interpreted as a confession. However, unbeknownst to him, his father was alive and awaiting a flight at Los Angeles International Airport.
Despite discovering Perez Sr. was alive, police placed Perez Jr. on a psychiatric hold. He was later reunited with his father, who had been unaware of the situation. Perez Jr. subsequently filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Fontana for mistreatment during the interrogation, ultimately settling for nearly $900,000 in 2024.
