A fatal shooting has devastated the small town of Warm Springs, Georgia. Officer Chris Fisher, a dedicated member of the Warm Springs Police Department, was killed late Tuesday night. He was sitting in his patrol car in the parking lot of the Meriwether Country Inn on Spring Street after concluding a traffic stop.
Authorities identified the suspect as 23-year-old Jimmy Lee Steverson of Warm Springs. GBI reports indicate Steverson drove away from the scene, leading to an extensive manhunt. Shortly before noon on Wednesday, deputies in Anderson County, South Carolina, located Steverson along Interstate 85.
As deputies approached his vehicle, they discovered Steverson had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died. Court records revealed that Officer Fisher had arrested Steverson just early Friday morning on marijuana and firearms charges; however, Steverson was subsequently released on bond.
Officer Fisher, a husband and father of two, had joined the Warm Springs Police Department in May and was promoted to sergeant in July. His previous service included roles as a deputy with the Meriwether County Sheriff's Office, Heard County Sheriff's Office, and Fayette County Sheriff's Office. The Warm Springs community, with a population of about 450 and fewer than 10 officers, is deeply affected by this tragedy, coming together to comfort Fisher's family and each other.
