Police Scam Alert: Bogus Officers Target Locals for Bank Details
15 Mar
Summary
- Scammers impersonated local police officers calling residents.
- Bogus officers attempted to obtain bank details from victims.
- Police advise hanging up and verifying identity before calling back.

Scammers have been impersonating local police officers, targeting residents with fraudulent phone calls to obtain sensitive bank details. In a recent incident on Saturday, four individuals in Great Yarmouth and nearby villages like Hemsby, Scratby, and Ormesby St Margaret received calls from these fake officers. Norfolk Police confirmed that no financial losses occurred as victims reported the scam attempts promptly. This particular scam differs from previous ones, as the callers pretended to be local officers rather than from distant stations.
Authorities emphasize that legitimate banks and police services would never request card details, account numbers, or PINs over the phone. To avoid falling victim, police advise residents to immediately hang up on suspicious calls. It is crucial to ensure a dial tone is present before redialing or to use a different phone to contact the authorities. Fraudsters often stay on the line, playing hold music to deceive victims into believing they have reached a genuine number.
