Pankaj Kumar, owner of the fraudulent Ganpati Pharma, was apprehended by Basti Police for his alleged role in the illegal distribution of 1.72 lakh bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. Kumar operated his fake pharmaceutical firm from Basti, utilizing forged documents and a fabricated address to facilitate large-scale distribution of the controlled substance.
The illegal operation was uncovered during an investigation by drug inspector Arvind Kumar, who discovered that Ganpati Pharma had procured a substantial quantity of codeine syrup without proper documentation. An FIR was filed, and a special investigation team was formed to unravel the extent of the racket.
Investigators believe Kumar masterminded a syndicate that sourced codeine syrup from various cities, including Ranchi and Lucknow. Several other traders connected to this illicit trade are now under scrutiny, with further arrests anticipated as the probe expands into Basti's wholesale and retail drug agencies.
