A man named Daejon Love, 35, has been accused of orchestrating an elaborate scam, defrauding women of over $1.3 million by pretending to be a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver. Prosecutors allege that Love, along with an 18-year-old accomplice, Taylor Jamie Chan, used popular dating apps and social media platforms to target women in California, Oregon, and Washington.
To bolster his false identity, Love went to extreme lengths, including staging fake workouts on public beaches with replica team gear and even presenting an AI-generated Google search that falsely listed him as a player. He often cited an injured finger as an excuse for not being on the active roster.
Love convinced his victims to take out high-interest personal loans, promising lucrative returns from fake investment programs. The substantial sums obtained were reportedly spent on luxury items and extravagant vacations to maintain his deceptive image. The scheme unraveled when victims ran out of funds or began questioning his finances.
Love and Chan were arrested by the FBI in August in Boise, Idaho. Love faces federal conspiracy and wire fraud charges and has pleaded not guilty. His federal jury trial is scheduled for December 15.
