AI Scams: Fake Boots Ads Promote Fake Weight Loss Drugs
26 Dec
Summary
- Fake Boots TikTok page used AI for weight loss ads.
- Scammers sold prescription drugs via fake health testimonials.
- Boots reported ads, leading to their eventual removal.

A deceptive social media operation on TikTok, which posed as the pharmacy chain Boots, has been dismantled following its promotion of fake, AI-generated weight-loss advertisements. The account utilized fabricated videos depicting health professionals endorsing prescription-only slimming drugs, often showing dramatic, AI-enhanced weight-loss transformations. These clips directed users to a website selling the medications, featuring testimonials that appeared to be artificially created or stolen from elsewhere.
Boots confirmed awareness of the videos and its reporting actions led to the account's eventual removal. Initially, the platform stated it prohibits misleading AI-generated ads and the promotion of controlled substances. However, the account, reportedly based in Hong Kong, remained active for a period, allowing the re-upload of deceptive content. Following further alerts, the fake account was permanently taken down.
