Celebrity facialist Sonya Dakar has surrendered her professional licenses after a former client, Victoria Nelson, accused her of causing permanent scarring. The licenses for esthetician and establishment were surrendered to the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, effective July 22, 2026. This action follows Nelson's lawsuit and complaint filed in December 2025.
Dakar, who previously treated clients like Gwyneth Paltrow, has agreed to pay Nelson $70,972.27 in restitution. Additionally, Dakar must pay $17,731.25 for investigation and enforcement costs. She is also barred from petitioning for reinstatement of her esthetician license for three years.
Nelson stated that while the settlement is a relief, it does not erase the physical or emotional damage. She continues to undergo dermatological treatment and is still dealing with the trauma. Nelson shared her story to encourage others facing similar issues with service providers, emphasizing that the system can work.
Nelson's personal lawsuit includes claims for fraud, unfair competition, and unlicensed practice of medicine, seeking damages exceeding $35,000. This civil case remains ongoing, separate from the licensing board's proceedings. The complaint also noted previous board interactions with Dakar, including a revoked license in 2011.
