Ahraula police in Azamgarh district encountered Shera Singh Yadav, an extortionist with a Rs 25,000 reward, late Saturday night. Yadav, 25, sustained a bullet injury to his leg during a retaliatory firing incident with police, leading to his arrest. He is a history-sheeter at the Ahraula police station, facing charges for robbery, extortion, fraud, and violations of the Gangster Act.
Authorities had been searching for Yadav since November 1, when he threatened and injured a medical practitioner, Dr. Birendra Kumar Prajapati, demanding Rs 2 lakh. During interrogation following his capture, Yadav admitted to targeting the doctor for extortion and identified his accomplice, Angad Yadav, who managed to escape.
During the encounter near Paschim Patti Mahaliya village, police signaled two youths on a motorcycle to stop. The suspects responded by firing at the officers, prompting a defensive response that resulted in Yadav's injury and capture. Police recovered a country-made pistol, cartridges, and Rs 540 cash from him. An intensive search for Angad Yadav is currently underway.
