A Perth Invasion Day rally was disrupted by the alleged landing of a homemade explosive device on stage, an event described as "terrifying" by prominent Noongar elder Herbert Bropho. Mr. Bropho was addressing the crowd in Forrest Place when the item was reportedly thrown from a walkway above.
Police quickly assessed the situation, initiating crowd dispersal and isolating the suspicious item. Specialist officers from the WA Police Bomb Response Unit confirmed it was an improvised explosive device containing volatile chemicals, nails, and metal ball bearings. Approximately 2,500 people were present at the rally.
A 31-year-old man from Warwick was subsequently arrested and charged with committing an unlawful act with intent to harm and making/possessing explosives under suspicious circumstances. He was denied bail and faced court on the same day as the charges were announced.
Despite the scare, rally attendees showed defiance, continuing their protest for land rights and other issues. Mr. Bropho stated the incident would remain a memory for future events, but affirmed his commitment to continuing his activism.
