Exploding Laughing Gas Canisters Threaten Waste Workers
12 Feb
Summary
- Exploding high-pressure canisters risk worker safety and damage waste facilities.
- Hundreds of explosions occur weekly, costing millions in repairs.
- Illegal recreational use leads to dangerous disposal practices.

Discarded high-pressure laughing gas canisters are causing dangerous explosions in waste management facilities across the UK. Major companies report hundreds of such incidents weekly, leading to significant damage to energy-from-waste plants and posing a serious threat to worker safety. These incidents result in millions of pounds in repair costs and can necessitate plant shutdowns.
Recreational users are illegally discarding these nitrous oxide canisters in household rubbish, a practice that has escalated with the increased use of larger canisters. While possession for recreational use became illegal in England and Wales in November 2023, the substance is still legally used in medicine and catering. Veolia has recorded thousands of explosions, highlighting the urgent need for proper disposal.
The Environmental Services Association is calling for licensing to prevent public access to these canisters and for stricter enforcement on retailers. Beyond the industrial impact, concerns are rising about drivers operating vehicles while impaired by laughing gas, with police forces noting its prevalence and its potential to be an aggravating factor in collisions.
Legal repercussions for unlawful possession include cautions, community service, or fines, with repeat offenders facing imprisonment. Production or supply carries a maximum sentence of 14 years. Data indicates a decrease in usage among young adults since the ban, though the illicit trade and its associated dangers persist.
